The Government is expected to unveil the Isiolo International Airport in two weeks’ time.
The opening of the sh2.7 billion airport will improve air connectivity between Isiolo tourist circuit and the capital city, Nairobi.
It will make it easier for international tourists to travel to Isiolo for safari as the circuit lies on the northern foot of Mount Kenya and is located 285km away from Nairobi.
Kenya plans to make Isiolo a resort city, and to achieve that the government built an international airport to offer services to locals and international visitors.
According to the Vision 2030 blue print, Isiolo resort city which is a flagship project – will have five-star hotel facilities, national parks, golf courses, leisure parks, theatres and amusement parks.
Isiolo is endowed with game reserves such as the Shaba Game Reserve, Buffalo Springs Game Reserve and Bisnadi Game Reserve.
The reserves harbor rare species of wildlife such as the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and the gerenuk.
According to Transport Principal Secretary, Paul Maringa, works on the 1.km runway are complete.
He says the airport has a state-of-the-art terminal building, apron, administration block, access roads and amenities to be able to offer quality service to travellers.
“The construction of the airport is complete and we expect operations to be launched in two weeks,” he added.
Local airlines such as national carrier, Kenya Airways, fly540, low-cost airline, Jambojet and Air Kenya are expected to begin operations to Isiolo.
Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director, Jonny Andersen, said: “Isiolo Airport will be able to handle international flights. But in the initial stages, the facility will start operation with domestic flights.”
Andersen noted that the opening of the airport would boost tourism in Isiolo given that the County is endowed with game reserves teeming with wildlife.
